SAP Sapphire 2026 took place in Orlando from 11 to 13 May and in Madrid from 19 to 21 May. SAP’s message was the “Autonomous Enterprise”: AI agents that run parts of your business processes, not just answer questions about them. Five months later, after SAP Connect and TechEd, we can check what shipped and what is still planned.

TL;DR: At Sapphire 2026 SAP announced more than 50 Joule Assistants and over 200 agents, a new Joule Studio and SAP Business AI Platform. By October 2026 parts are generally available or in phased GA (AI Agent Hub, Joule Studio, the first CX assistants); more is planned for Q1 2027. GROW customers get portfolio access to the assistants at onboarding. The first AI promotions end in December 2026, and the cited announcements do not state what follows.

The platform rename from BTP to SAP Business AI Platform (BAIP, formerly BTP) has its own post: SAP BTP is now SAP Business AI Platform. The developer view of TechEd 2026 is in our TechEd 2026 summary. Here we look at what the announcements mean for Swiss and DACH companies running SAP CX and Cloud ERP.

What did SAP announce at Sapphire 2026?

SAP’s Sapphire press release of 12 May 2026 rests on three things: Joule Work as the new way to work with SAP, the SAP Autonomous Suite with “more than 50 domain-specific Joule Assistants” orchestrating “a subset of over 200 specialized agents”, and SAP Business AI Platform as the foundation. CEO Christian Klein framed the bar: “For the mission-critical processes of our customers, ‘almost right’ just isn’t good enough.”

The rest of the release, in short:

  • Models and partners. Anthropic’s Claude as one of the foundation models behind Joule agents (SAP and Anthropic), Mistral AI and Cohere as sovereign model options, agent-to-agent interoperability with Google Cloud and Microsoft, and zero-copy integration between Business Data Cloud and Amazon Athena.
  • Migration. Agent-led transformation tooling that SAP says “can reduce ERP migration efforts by more than 35 percent”. That is a vendor figure; we have not measured it yet.
  • Finance. An Autonomous Close Assistant that SAP says can take the close “from weeks to days”.
  • Partners. A €100 million fund to help partners deploy SAP-built assistants and agents, including partner agents built with Joule Studio.

The press release itself gives no availability dates. That is why a status check five months later is worth more than a recap.

What has actually shipped by October 2026?

Part of it. SAP’s Q3 2026 release highlights put Joule Studio and the first CX assistants into phased general availability and list Mistral on SAP BAIP as GA. Other items are planned for Q1 2027. Our status table, with the source for every line:

Announced at Sapphire 2026 Status end of October 2026 Source
SAP Business AI Platform In effect; BTP services continue under the new name our BAIP post
Joule Studio (new version) GA underway in phases; agent builder free until December 2026, then a premium AI feature SAP Q3 2026
SAP AI Agent Hub Generally available SAP News, 8 October 2026
Joule Work GA underway in phases SAP TechEd innovation news guide
CX assistants (planned GA Q3 2026 at Sapphire) Case Management Assistant and Deal Qualification Assistant: GA underway in phases SAP Q3 2026
More CX capabilities (Content, Campaign and Shopping Assistants) and new assistants such as Quoting Planned for Q1 2027, per SAP Connect in October Info-Tech note, 15 October 2026
SAP Commerce Cloud, cloud ERP edition Available Info-Tech note, 15 October 2026
Mistral as sovereign model option Mistral on SAP BAIP GA; fully sovereign version planned for early 2027 SAP Q3 2026
Claude in Joule agents Partnership announced, no availability date in the announcement SAP News, May 2026

Nota bene: “GA underway in phases” means SAP is introducing availability progressively. Confirm eligibility and activation for your own tenant before you plan with it.

What changes for SAP CX customers?

SAP’s Sapphire CX article named ten Joule Assistants across marketing, commerce, sales and service, and stated that the CX innovations were “planned for general availability in Q3 2026”. As of the end of October, the Case Management and Deal Qualification Assistants are in phased GA, SAP Commerce Cloud, cloud ERP edition, is available, and SAP is embedding Parloa’s voice and digital agents in Service Cloud. SAP’s Sapphire CX article does not mention CPQ, Field Service Management or SAP Engagement Cloud.

Our Joule assistant navigator shows the status and prerequisites per CX assistant, and the Joule hands-on guide for Sales Cloud V2 shows what works today. We will go through the CX assistants product by product in a separate post.

One observation from our CX projects: cases and leads are a good place for the first pilots, because most of the data sits in the CX product, though integration needs still depend on the scenario. Order management and quoting need data across CRM and ERP. An assistant that has to reconcile CRM and ERP inherits every gap at that seam.

What do RISE, GROW and ECC customers get?

The commercial terms were the most concrete part of Sapphire. In SAP’s words: “SAP GROW customers receive full portfolio access at onboarding”, while “RISE with SAP customers will have three assistants activated within their first year”. ECC and S/4HANA on-premise customers “are not excluded”: for them, the offer of select AI scenarios requires a commitment to move most of their landscape to SAP Cloud ERP (SAP press release).

For the Swiss mid-market this is a real argument for the cloud. Which assistants are released, how they are activated and what they consume is a separate question to settle in the contract. Our GROW versus RISE comparison and the ECC 2027 hub go into the details.

The other side is cost. The Joule Studio agent builder is free until December 2026 and then becomes a premium AI feature (SAP Q3 2026), and the cited announcements do not state the charges after the promotions. The DSAG, which also speaks for Swiss SAP users, asked SAP for exactly that cost transparency in its statement on TechEd of 27 October 2026.

Spadoom’s view

Prima vista, Sapphire 2026 was a slide deck with 50 assistants and 200 agents. A posteriori, the picture is more useful than that. The foundation shipped: AI Agent Hub, Joule Studio in phased GA, interoperability, the GROW terms. The business assistants arrive in waves. That is a reasonable order. It just doesn’t match the keynote’s pace.

For our customers, the headline is not a single agent. It’s that SAP ties its broadest AI terms to the cloud, and GROW with S/4HANA Public Cloud gets portfolio access at onboarding. We see that as an argument for clean, standard processes in a Public Cloud core with CX on top, which is what we build at Spadoom: S/4HANA Public Cloud and Sales, Service and Commerce Cloud from one team. Our own products, Engage and Pulse, run on SAP BAIP, so we follow the platform side from the inside.

What we don’t recommend: waiting for the 2027 assistants before you do anything. The data work that makes an assistant useful (clean opportunities, case categories, master data across CRM and ERP) is yours to do whatever SAP ships. Start there.

What to do now

  1. Check what is live in your tenant. Compare the Q3 2026 release notes with your licences. “Announced at Sapphire” is not “available to you”.
  2. Use the current promotions where you are eligible. One process, one agent, real usage numbers before December 2026. That is your basis for the 2027 negotiation.
  3. Ask SAP for the applicable rates in writing before you scale a pilot: AI units per agent action, the agent builder after the promotion, the managed runtime.
  4. If you are on ECC, make the cloud decision deliberately. The AI terms favour GROW and RISE; let them inform the decision, not drive it alone.
  5. Clean the data the first assistants need. Qualification criteria in Sales Cloud V2, case categories and knowledge articles in Service Cloud V2.
  6. Clarify data residency and model choice if you are regulated: which model, which region, which contract. Mistral is GA on SAP BAIP; the announced sovereign AI extension gives no Swiss date yet.

Are the CX Joule Assistants announced at Sapphire available?

Partly. At Sapphire SAP planned the CX innovations for general availability in Q3 2026. SAP’s Q3 2026 release highlights say general availability is underway in a phased approach for the Case Management Assistant and the Deal Qualification Assistant. Additional capabilities for the Content, Campaign and Shopping Assistants and a new Quoting Assistant are planned for Q1 2027.

What happens to Joule Studio pricing after December 2026?

SAP says the Joule Studio agent builder is free until December 2026 and then becomes a premium AI feature, while the skill builder is a base AI feature and design-time tooling stays free under fair-use limits. The SAP-managed runtime is free through December 2026 for select customers. The cited announcements do not state the charges after the promotions, so ask your SAP account team for the applicable rates in writing.

Did SAP announce anything for CPQ, Field Service Management or Engagement Cloud at Sapphire 2026?

SAP’s Sapphire CX article does not mention CPQ, Field Service Management or SAP Engagement Cloud. Engagement Cloud’s AI content composer appears in SAP’s Q3 2026 release highlights as generally available.
