SAP Business Data Cloud Explained: What It Actually Is
Dario Pedol

SAP announced Business Data Cloud in February 2025, and a year in, the picture is clear enough to explain without the launch-event vocabulary. This post is the plain-language version we give our own clients: what BDC is, what it replaces, and when it should be on a Swiss mid-market roadmap.
The one-sentence takeaway: BDC is SAP taking over the data plumbing you used to build yourself.
The problem BDC exists to solve
Every company running SAP has the same analytics history. The ERP holds the truth, the CRM holds a different truth, and between them sits a landscape of extractors, staging tables, and BI models that somebody built years ago and everybody is afraid to touch. When the CFO asks why the pipeline report disagrees with the revenue report, the honest answer is usually “because two different people modelled ‘revenue’ in two different decades.”
The expensive part was never the dashboard. It was keeping the extraction and modelling layer alive through every release, every schema change, every new field somebody added to the order object.
What SAP Business Data Cloud actually is
SAP Business Data Cloud is a managed SaaS platform with three parts:
- The bundle: SAP Datasphere and SAP Analytics Cloud, now packaged and managed as one offering — one contract, one tenant model, one management plane.
- Embedded Databricks: a native Databricks engine inside BDC for data engineering and machine learning, running on SAP data under SAP governance instead of in a copied-out shadow platform.
- Data products: the actually new idea. SAP ships curated, semantically consistent datasets from its own applications — S/4HANA finance and logistics, SAP Sales Cloud V2 pipeline and accounts, SuccessFactors workforce data — zero-copy, versioned, and maintained by SAP through every release.
That third part is the one to understand. A data product is SAP saying: you no longer extract and model our application data — we deliver it modelled, and we keep it current. The maintenance burden that killed a thousand BW projects moves from your team to SAP’s product organisation.
What it is not
BDC is not a BI tool you buy because dashboards look dated — the dashboards are the least interesting layer. It is not a data lake to dump everything into; it is opinionated about SAP data first, with connectivity for the rest. And it is not a rip-and-replace of Datasphere: if you run Datasphere today, it becomes part of BDC and your models carry over. We wrote a separate piece on exactly that: BDC and Datasphere — what changes, what stays.
When a mid-market company should care
Honest answer: not every company needs to move this quarter. You should care now if any of these is true:
- You are implementing or planning S/4HANA Public Cloud or a cloud CX stack. Greenfield cloud programmes should put their analytics on BDC from day one — retrofitting is the expensive path.
- Your CRM and ERP numbers disagree and it costs you meetings. The pipeline-to-cash view — opportunities joined with orders and invoices — is precisely what SAP’s data products are built for.
- You have an AI roadmap. Joule agents and AI features read from the data layer. AI on top of a contradictory data landscape produces confident nonsense faster.
If none of those apply, watch the space and skip the pilot. Tools without a question to answer become shelfware, whatever the logo.
What we tell our clients
Start with one domain and one question that management actually asks — for most of our clients that is sales analytics, because we implement the systems that feed it. Activate BDC, consume the Sales Cloud V2 and S/4HANA data products, ship one insight app to the people who asked. Weeks, not quarters. Our Business Data Cloud practice is built around exactly that first step.
The strategic point is bigger than any single report: SAP is consolidating its data stack the way it consolidated its cloud applications. The companies that treat data as a foundation — not as a reporting afterthought — are the ones whose AI features will actually work in three years.
